Thank you Daphne Sowerby, Feb 1930 – Dec 2018

Daphne Sowerby was a valued friend, dedicated supporter and wonderful ambassador for Arohanui Hospice for nearly 28 years.

Aged 88, Daphne died peacefully at Nelson Residential Home in Feilding on 22 December 2018.

Since 1991, she gave thousands of hours of her time to benefit Arohanui Hospice; making and selling baking, craft items, jams, plants and many other items; and donating the proceeds.  Her crafts were legendary, as was ‘Daphne’s Stall’ held over 27 years, originally at her own home, then her daughter’s home as the stall grew in size, and more recently at the church hall in Stafford Street, Feilding.

Daphne’s connection with Arohanui Hospice began when her husband Albert was in its care. In fact, Albert was one of the hospice’s first patients. Daphne often reflected on her wish to give back and her love of crafts was the perfect way to combine two of her passions.

Daphne’s selfless contribution was truly outstanding  – raising community spirit, and promoting and fundraising to help Arohanui Hospice provide free-of-charge specialist end-of-life care for patients and support for their families.

In 2012, Daphne was nominated for and well-deservedly awarded a Manawatu District Community Honours Award.

In 2016, Daphne celebrated another wonderful achievement; having raised more than $100,000 for Arohanui Hospice. Always modest about her achievement, Daphne gave credit to her many helpers.

Thank you Daphne for your generosity and support of Arohanui Hospice. You were a remarkable woman, with tireless enthusiasm and exceptional generosity. Rest well.

A little means a lot
