Hendrika Hoogendyk’s Art Collection to Support Arohanui Hospice: An Exhibition of Generosity and Legacy

Palmerston North, 21 October 2024— Arohanui Hospice is honoured to announce the exhibition of an art collection bequeathed by the late Hendrika Hoogendyk, a woman whose passion for the arts and commitment to her community will continue to impact lives through this generous act. The exhibition will showcase a curated selection of Hendrika’s personal art collection, with many pieces available for purchase. All proceeds will directly support the vital work of Arohanui Hospice, ensuring continued care and comfort for individuals and families in need.

Hendrika Hoogendyk, a legal professional with a deep love for art, literature, and New Zealand’s natural beauty, was a woman known for her unwavering dedication to both her clients and her community. Her bequest of this collection speaks to her lifelong commitment to contributing to the well-being of others. This exhibition is a unique opportunity for the public to view and own pieces from a collection that captures Hendrika’s discerning eye and deep appreciation for the arts.

"Arohanui Hospice is deeply grateful for Hendrika’s incredible generosity. Her thoughtful bequest ensures that her legacy lives on, both in the beauty of the art collection and in the essential care that these funds will help provide to our patients and their families," says Clare Randall, Chief Executive, of Arohanui Hospice.

The collection features a range of works, with many reflecting Hendrika’s love for the natural world, especially the coastal beauty of New Zealand. The public is invited to visit the exhibition, view the collection, and purchase pieces that resonate with them, knowing that each acquisition will support the hospice’s mission of providing specialist palliative care and support to people with life limiting illnesses at no charge.

In addition to celebrating Hendrika’s legacy, Arohanui Hospice wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Bronwyn Zimmerman from Zimmerman Art Gallery and the dedicated volunteers whose efforts have been instrumental in bringing this exhibition to life.

About Arohanui Hospice:

Since 1991 Arohanui Hospice in Palmerston North has been providing specialist palliative care for people with a life-limiting illness in the Manawatū, Tararua, Horowhenua and Rangitīkei regions.

  • Care provided by Arohanui Hospice enables patients to achieve the best possible quality of life, and provides support to their families.
  • Hospice care is holistic, encompassing the physical, psychosocial, spiritual and cultural needs of the patient and their family.
  • Care is free of charge and provided wherever people need it - at the hospice inpatient unit, at home or an alternative comfortable environment.
  • The services provided include support of the patient in the community, inpatient care, 24-hour advice, outpatient clinics, day procedures, an activities-based day programme, social work services, family support, pastoral and bereavement support.
  • The majority of patients cared for each year by Arohanui Hospice have cancer. However, we also care for people with non-malignant conditions such as motor neurone disease, respiratory disease and heart disease.
  • Arohanui Hospice is only partly funded by the government and each year needs to make up the shortfall in funding. In the 2024-2025 financial year the hospice needs to raise over $4 million from the community.
