Year 4 students Matilda Waite and Harper Bradnock from College Street Normal School have proven that with determination, creativity, and a sprinkle of sugar, even the smallest hands can make the biggest difference. Through their cupcake venture, The Royal Sugar Cupcakes, these young entrepreneurs raised an incredible $1188.40 for Arohanui Hospice, spreading joy one sweet treat at a time.
Their journey began with a classroom project to "solve a problem by doing something you love." Matilda and Harper, who share a passion for baking, saw an opportunity to combine their love for cupcakes and business with their desire to support a local charity.
Choosing Arohanui Hospice
Their choice to support Arohanui Hospice was deeply personal. Matilda shared, “My Opa was in hospice, and he died. It was sad; he was my mum’s dad. Hospice helped my family.” Harper added, “I always choose the Arohanui Hospice for the coin vote at the supermarket.”
Their decision was further fueled by research and family discussions, solidifying their commitment to making a real impact for a cause close to their hearts.
From a Small Sale to a Giant Success
With an initial batch of 102 cupcakes priced at $3 each, the girls anticipated a modest turnout. To their surprise, their treats sold out before the school bell rang, leaving classmates clamoring for more. Undeterred, Matilda and Harper got back in the kitchen over the weekend, whipping up an additional 200 cupcakes and lolly kebabs, which sold out again.
Matilda recalled, “It’s funny how it went from such a small little sale to a giant sale.” Harper added, “Selling them and making money felt so good, especially knowing it was going to a charity.”
Lessons Learned Along the Way
The journey wasn’t just about baking; it was a crash course in entrepreneurship. Harper said, “We learned a lot about how to actually run a business.” Matilda added, “And count money! Plus, we discovered a secret recipe, but we can’t share it.”
When asked about their favorite parts, Harper beamed, “Selling them and seeing how happy people were.” Matilda chimed in, “Making them and finding out how much money we had made at the end.”
The Sweet Outcome
Through their dedication and teamwork, the girls raised $1188.40, demonstrating the power of community, kindness, and a shared goal.
